Against the harmful skag -valkyrie, so that she never shall, though she never would — evil woman! This is followed by "I send you, I look at you, wolfish perversion, and unbearable desire, may distress descend on you and jöluns wrath.
Never shall you sit, never shall you sleep Many valkyrie names emphasize associations with battle and, in many cases, on the spear—a weapon heavily associated with the god Odin.
Some valkyrie names may be descriptive of the roles and abilities of the valkyries. The valkyrie name Herja has been theorised as pointing to a connection to the name of the goddess Hariasa , who is attested from a stone from CE.
They were loud, yes, loud, when they rode over the burial mound; they were fierce when they rode across the land.
Shield yourself now, you can survive this strife. Out, little spear, if there is one here within. Theories have been proposed that these figures are connected to valkyries.
Settle down, victory-women, never be wild and fly to the woods. Be as mindful of my welfare, as is each man of eating and of home.
The term "victory women" has been theorised as pointing to an association with valkyries. This theory is not universally accepted, and the reference has also been theorised as a simple metaphor for the "victorious sword" the stinging of the bees.
The incantation reads:. Once the Idisi sat, sat here and there, some bound fetters, some hampered the army, some untied fetters: Escape from the fetters, flee from the enemies.
The Idisi mentioned in the incantation are generally considered to be valkyries. Rudolf Simek says that "these Idisi are obviously a kind of valkyrie, as these also have the power to hamper enemies in Norse mythology" and points to a connection with the valkyrie name Herfjötur Old Norse "army-fetter".
In addition, the place name Idisiaviso meaning "plain of the Idisi" where forces commanded by Arminius fought those commanded by Germanicus at the Battle of the Weser River in 16 AD.
Simek points to a connection between the name Idisiaviso , the role of the Idisi in one of the two Merseburg Incantations and valkyries.
Jacob Grimm states that, though the norns and valkyries are similar in nature, there is a fundamental difference between the two. The norns have to pronounce the fatum [fate], they sit on their chairs, or they roam through the country among mortals, fastening their threads.
Nowhere is it said that they ride. The valkyrs ride to war, decide the issues of fighting, and conduct the fallen to heaven; their riding is like that of heroes and gods".
Various theories have been proposed about the origins and development of the valkyries from Germanic paganism to later Norse mythology.
Rudolf Simek suggests valkyries were probably originally viewed as "demons of the dead to whom warriors slain on the battlefield belonged", and that a shift in interpretation of the valkyries may have occurred "when the concept of Valhalla changed from a battlefield to a warrior's paradise".
Simek says that this original concept was "superseded by the shield girls —Irish female warriors who lived on like the einherjar in Valhall.
Simek states that due to the shift of concept, the valkyries became popular figures in heroic poetry , and during this transition were stripped of their "demonic characteristics and became more human, and therefore become capable of falling in love with mortals [ MacLeod and Mees theorise that "the role of the corpse-choosing valkyries became increasingly confused in later Norse mythology with that of the Norns , the supernatural females responsible for determining human destiny [ Hilda Ellis Davidson says that, regarding valkyries, "evidently an elaborate literary picture has been built up by generations of poets and storytellers, in which several conceptions can be discerned.
We recognise something akin to Norns, spirits who decide destinies of men; to the seeresses , who could protect men in battle with their spells; to the powerful female guardian spirits attached to certain families, bringing luck to youth under their protection; even to certain women who armed themselves and fought like men, for whom there is some historical evidence from the regions round the Black Sea ".
She adds that there may also be a memory in this of a "priestess of the god of war, women who officiated at the sacrificial rites when captives were put to death after battle.
Davidson places emphasis on the fact that valkyrie literally means "chooser of the slain". She compares Wulfstan's mention of a "chooser of the slain" in his Sermo Lupi ad Anglos sermon, which appears among "a blacklist of sinners, witches and evildoers", to "all the other classes whom he [Wulfstan] mentions", and concludes as those "are human ones, it seems unlikely that he has introduced mythological figures as well.
Davidson says that "it would hardly be surprising if strange legends grew up about such women, who must have been kept apart from their kind due to their gruesome duties.
Since it was often decided by lot which prisoners should be killed, the idea that the god "chose" his victims, through the instrument of the priestesses, must have been a familiar one, apart from the obvious assumption that some were chosen to fall in war.
Näsström notes that, just like Odin, Freyja receives slain heroes who have died on the battlefield, and that her house is Sessrumnir which she translates as "filled with many seats" , a dwelling that Näsström posits likely fills the same function as Valhalla.
Through it he has subjected others to his will, and by it he prevents strife between gods and giants. It is his ego, and its power is eventually broken by the superior power of the Sword, representing youthful strength and love" Blyth, Sword A sword is one of several objects in the Ring that are highlighted by Wagner for its symbolic significance in Teutonic mythology and for its theatrical utility.
It is "the symbol of strength and the burning force of life" Blyth, In the tradition of the naming of swords throughout various Teutonic myths and heroic epics, Wagner calls the sword of his Ring Notung, which means "child 'born' of need.
Its fragments are inherited by Siegmund's son, Siegfried, through Mime, who is powerless to recreate this life force.
Only Siegfried is able to refashion the sword, and uses it as a weapon" to kill the dragon Fafner. Click below to hear Wagner's leitmotiv for the sword.
Thunder Like lightning, thunder was used for dramatic purposes in the Ring. The musical effect of thunder could be achieved through the hitting of a bass drum or similar instrument.
The only instance in which Wagner includes thunder in his operas occurs at the end of Das Rheingold when Thor uses Mjollnir to clear the skies so the gods clearly can see the way to Valhalla.
Tree Much of the Ring drama takes place within nature. The stage settings of four of the ten acts of the Ring have a forest as part of the scene.
One set of stage instructions even specifies that the forest is a fir tree forest. Wagner refused to put the Oak tree into the plot of his dramas, though this tree was an especially sacred tree in early Teutonic mythology.
Instead, Wagner specifically used three types of trees in the Ring : the fir, the linden and the ash. The fir tree, Tannenwald, is used throughout the operas as a background setting, since it evoked the atmosphere of the Germanic forests.
But, Wagner does not highlight the symbolic nature of the fir as he does the linden and the ash. The linden is the tree for lovers who wish to fall in love, and it may also cause a hero to fall into a deep enchanted sleep.
In the second act of Siegfried , the hero lies under a linden tree, dreams of his father and mother, and wishes he could understand the song of the Forest Bird.
Unlike the linden's association with love and fertility, the ash tree was seen as the tree of war. The ash gave warriors silent warnings about war; warriors wished to die in battle under an ash for they might get selected by Odin to go to Valhalla; and the favored spears of the culture were fashioned from the ash tree.
Yggdrasill was the eternally groaning World Ash Tree of Teutonic mythology. Though Wagner never refers to any of the ashes throughout his dramas as Yggdrasill, he nonetheless included three ash trees in the Ring.
In the final scene of the first act of Siegfried , Siegfried begins to reforge the two pieces of Notung, his father's word. While Siegfried is working, he tells of the ash he felled from which he made the fuel for the fire.
This detail is important because the fire allows Siegfried to remake the sword that will kill the dragon Fafner and will allow the hero to reclaim the gold and to shatter the supreme power of Wotan.
The other two ash trees Wagner features in the Ring are the ash seen in the beginning of Die Walkure that is Hunding's dwelling, a tree that was formerly an oak, and the tree under which the Norns weave their Rope of destiny in the "Prelude" to Gotterdammerung Blyth; Cord.
Wanderer In Siegfried , the young hero meets up with a mysterious Wanderer, who is really his grandfather, the god Wotan, in disguise. Throughout Teutonic mythology, the all-father Wotan Wagner's version of Odin transforms himself so he can travel freely amongst the nine worlds.
Similarly, Wagner's Wotan is also famed for his various disguises; but, Wotan must rely on his own powers and cleverness, not objects like the Tarnhelm, the magic hat cap , in order to change his appearance Cord, I, Click below to hear Wotan's leitmotif for the Wanderer.
Water "The third element of the Grecian concept of the fundamental consituents of creation is water. This basic element The first offering is evident at the rise of the first curtain, in the initial scene of Das Rheingold whose setting is the bottom of the Rhine River.
It this Rhine that steadily makes its own way through the lengthy drma and is regularly sensed as being almost ever-present by means of the numerous references to it by the players Of course, the Rhine and its waters become a primary factor in the last moments of the Ring , primary in the sense that it is the Rhine that overflows its banks and floods the world, extinguishing the conflagration that has brought defeat and destruction to the gods.
There can be no suggestion that the element of water is lacking in the Ring " Cord, At the end of Gotterdammerung , Wagner took advantage of the symbolic nature of water for dramatic effect in causing Hagen, Alberich's evil son, to die by drowning in the Rhine river.
Thus it was that death by drowning was to be the cause of Hagen's death, but it was not a drowning at any place, in just any water.
Rather, he would cause Hagen's death to be in the Rhine, the waters that are so significant throughout his drama and the waters that had served as the original home of the gold and to which it would be returned by Brunnhilde in her final moments" Cord, III:1, Wolf "Wagner understood the matter of the wolf in the lives of the gods, and especially that animal's association with Wotan Odin.
He sensed that it would be thematically correct and dramatically appropriate to bring that association into his Ring drama. And thus it is that the theme of the wolf takes a silent but nevertheless rightful role in Wagner's Nibelung tale.
